The Klan, etc. went to the Republicans after Johnson passed the Voting Rights Act, and started cracking down on lynchings, and other white pastimes in the South. The South had been solidly Democratic since Lincoln, and Reconstruction.

Reagan told lies about "welfare queens". Bush 1 used Willie Horton to scare his base and other whites away from Dukakis.
